President Donald Trump marked his 79th birthday with a massive show of military force in the nation’s capital on Saturday, presiding over the largest U.S. military parade in decades. The spectacle, held to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army, unfolded against a backdrop of growing domestic unrest and escalating conflict in the Middle East.

Tanks rumbled past the White House, fighter jets thundered overhead, and nearly 7,000 troops from across U.S. history marched in formation as Trump saluted from a specially constructed stage. The president, who has long expressed admiration for such grand military displays, called the United States “the hottest country in the world” in his brief remarks, and praised American soldiers for their strength and resolve.

“They fight, fight, fight—and they win, win, win,” Trump told the assembled crowd, avoiding his usual political rhetoric. But his address included a stern warning to adversaries: “Time and again, America’s enemies have learned that if you threaten the American people, our soldiers are coming for you.”

The White House estimated attendance at more than 250,000, although no independent verification was provided. Meanwhile, critics say the event served less as a celebration of military history and more as a showcase of authoritarian pageantry, drawing comparisons to parades in Pyongyang and Moscow.

‘No Kings’ Protests Erupt Nationwide

While the president basked in the orchestrated grandeur of the parade, the rest of the nation saw a markedly different scene. Tens of thousands joined “No Kings” protests in cities from New York to Houston to Los Angeles, decrying what organizers called Trump’s increasing “dictatorial overreach.”

“I think people are mad as hell,” said Lindsay Ross, a 28-year-old musician marching in New York. Protesters carried signs denouncing the president’s use of military force at home, particularly in cities where federal troops have recently been deployed in response to anti-immigration raids.

In Los Angeles, peaceful demonstrators were dispersed with teargas and mounted police outside the federal building, amid the presence of Marines and National Guard troops. Protests also occurred outside Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida and as far away as Paris.

“This isn’t patriotism—it’s a display of authoritarianism,” said protester Sarah Hargrave in suburban Maryland.

Shadow of Violence

Casting a grim shadow over the day’s events, a Democratic lawmaker and her husband were shot and killed in what Minnesota’s governor described as a targeted attack. Former state House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her spouse were gunned down near Minneapolis, with two others, including another state legislator, hospitalized with gunshot wounds. Trump quickly condemned the violence, though the motive remains under investigation.

The president’s display of power comes as U.S. foreign policy faces renewed scrutiny. Tensions flared abroad on the same day, with Iran and Israel exchanging missile fire, raising fears of deeper U.S. involvement in the region.

With military costs for the parade estimated at $45 million and no shortage of political fallout, Trump’s birthday celebration may prove to be one of the most polarizing moments of his second term—revered by supporters as a patriotic tribute and reviled by critics as a dangerous slide toward authoritarianism.
