Kazan, the capital of Russia’s Tatarstan region, was rocked by a series of drone strikes, causing widespread damage and panic among residents. Authorities reported that eight drones were involved in the attack, with six targeting residential areas, leading to fires in the Sovetsky, Kirovsky, and Privolzhsky districts. Emergency services quickly responded to extinguish the fires and evacuate affected residents. While no fatalities have been reported, three individuals sustained minor injuries, mainly from cuts caused by shattered glass. Evacuated residents have been provided with temporary shelter and food, as emergency crews continue to secure the impacted areas.
The strikes also affected Kazan’s educational institutions, prompting selective evacuations in schools, colleges, and universities. Local authorities have urged residents to remain alert and take shelter in basements if warning sirens sound. One drone struck an industrial enterprise, leading to the evacuation of employees to designated shelters, while another was shot down over a river. In response to the attacks, operations at Kazan Airport have been temporarily restricted, and mass events in the city have been canceled for the next two days to ensure public safety.
As Kazan grapples with the immediate aftermath of the attacks, significant military developments are underway in Crimea. Satellite images have revealed the construction of reinforced concrete shelters at the Belbek airfield, an area that has faced repeated strikes from Western-supplied ATACMS and Storm Shadow missiles, as well as kamikaze drones. At least ten arched shelters are in various stages of construction, alongside lightweight protective structures, to safeguard aviation assets at the vulnerable airfield.
In a separate development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed ambassadors to China, Slovenia, Japan, Lithuania, Kenya, and Rwanda. While the reasons for these diplomatic changes remain unclear, they represent a significant reshuffling of Ukraine’s foreign policy team during a critical period of heightened tensions in the region.
