Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is reportedly preparing to announce the formal annexation of the West Bank within weeks, according to investigative journalist Seymour Hersh. The controversial move, if realized, would mark a dramatic escalation in Israel’s territorial claims and could dismantle any lingering prospects for a two-state solution.
Hersh revealed in an article on his Substack that the decision is driven by demands from religious factions within Netanyahu’s cabinet seeking full control over occupied Palestinian territories. He cited a Washington source indicating that the Israeli government aims to “end, once and for all, any talk of a two-state solution” and potentially sway Arab nations to invest in Gaza’s reconstruction.
The timing, Hersh wrote, appears calculated to coincide with the closing weeks of U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration, potentially creating a new status quo before President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January. Trump’s previous term saw U.S. recognition of Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights and the relocation of the American embassy to Jerusalem.
Israel has intensified its military operations in Gaza since declaring war on Hamas last October, following a deadly incursion by the Palestinian group into Israeli territory that left 1,100 Israelis dead and around 250 taken captive. Palestinian officials estimate that approximately 44,000 people have been killed and over 104,000 injured in Gaza since the Israeli offensive began.
Simultaneously, Israeli forces have cracked down on Palestinians in the West Bank, further stoking tensions. The territory, governed by the Fatah faction, has seen increased military activity as part of the broader conflict.
The annexation of the West Bank, captured by Israel during the 1967 war, would contravene international law, which views the area as occupied territory. Numerous UN resolutions have called for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state encompassing both the West Bank and Gaza.
Critics argue that formal annexation would solidify Israel’s control over the region, effectively extinguishing the vision of Palestinian statehood. Supporters within Netanyahu’s government claim it would bolster Israel’s security and sovereignty.
Hersh, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist known for breaking major stories such as the My Lai massacre and Abu Ghraib prison abuses, framed the potential move as part of a broader agenda fortified by U.S. support. Washington has long been a key ally of Israel, providing substantial military aid and diplomatic backing.
If Netanyahu proceeds with the annexation, it could ignite widespread backlash from the international community, further inflame tensions in the region, and complicate U.S. relations with Arab states seeking a balanced approach to Middle East peace.
