Sir Keir Starmer became Prime Minister on 5 July 2024.

The latest data from the UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed a significant shift in the popularity of baby names for 2023, with “Muhammad” now officially the most popular name for baby boys in England and Wales.

In the past year, more than 4,600 babies were given the name Muhammad, marking an increase of almost 500 compared to the previous year. The name has now overtaken “Noah,” which had previously held the top spot.

This shift in naming trends comes amidst ongoing debates on immigration in the UK. In late November, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer accused the Conservative Party of running an “open borders experiment” after new figures revealed that net migration to the UK had hit a record high of nearly 1 million during the tenures of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson and current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

However, Starmer’s leadership has not been without controversy. Earlier in the year, he faced criticism for his handling of a crisis in Southport, which led to a wave of violent riots. Despite this, the rise of Muhammad in the baby names rankings stands as a notable cultural shift, reflecting broader demographic changes in the UK.
