North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un Inspects New Frigate Under Construction

North Korea is ramping up its naval capabilities with the construction of a new frigate for the Korean People’s Army Navy, marking a significant leap forward in its military technology. Recent images reveal the ship is expected to feature a vertical launch system (VLS), potentially capable of deploying cruise and anti-aircraft missiles, akin to systems like the Russian UKSK 3S14 or the American Mk 41. If completed as planned, this vessel would become the first North Korean frigate equipped with guided missile weaponry, signaling a shift in the nation’s naval strategy.

First Look at North Korea’s Advanced Missile-Equipped Frigate Under Construction

The construction of the advanced warship aligns with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s recent directives to fortify the country’s defense capabilities. Chairing a year-end meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party, Kim outlined North Korea’s strategy for 2025, calling for the “toughest” measures against the United States to safeguard its security and sovereignty.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that the meeting emphasized advancing defense science and technology to bolster North Korea’s deterrence capabilities. Party and government officials also vowed to strengthen ties with “friendly” nations while condemning the US, South Korea, and Japan as a “nuclear military bloc.”

The KCNA report labeled South Korea an “anti-communist outpost of the US” and described the United States as “the most reactionary state” in its commitment to anti-communism. This rhetoric underscores Pyongyang’s intention to aggressively counter perceived threats from the trilateral alliance of Washington, Seoul, and Tokyo.
