Switzerland has extended an offer to facilitate a high-stakes meeting between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Swiss government expressed its readiness to host the summit, should both leaders request it, according to a report by Le Tempus.
Nicolas Bidault, a spokesperson for the Swiss Foreign Ministry, emphasized Switzerland’s longstanding commitment to peace and diplomacy. “Since the Bürgenstock summit, Ukraine, Russia, and the United States have been regularly informed of our readiness to support any diplomatic efforts that contribute to the establishment of peace,” Bidault said.
This offer comes after several years of diplomatic engagements in Switzerland, a neutral ground for international meetings. Notably, in 2021, Swiss soil was the site of the last summit between President Joe Biden and President Putin, which took place in Geneva.
The possibility of a Trump-Putin summit has gained traction following mutual interest from both the former U.S. president and the Kremlin. Trump recently confirmed that preparations are already underway for such a meeting, signaling an eagerness to rekindle ties between the two world leaders. This follows a public statement by the Kremlin expressing its desire for a meeting with Trump after the inauguration of the new U.S. president.
