Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is facing an investigation by Rome prosecutors following her government’s controversial decision to return a Libyan warlord, Osama Elmasry Njeem, to Libya. Njeem, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity, was arrested earlier this month in Turin under an ICC warrant. However, he was released by Italian authorities and sent back to Libya on an Italian government plane just days later, sparking outrage and concern.
In a video posted to social media on Tuesday, Meloni confirmed that she, along with justice minister Carlo Nordio, interior minister Matteo Piantedosi, and other government officials, are being investigated in connection with the case. The decision to return Njeem has raised questions about Italy’s commitment to international justice and its adherence to the ICC’s mandates.
The ICC has expressed dismay at Italy’s actions, emphasizing that Njeem should have been handed over to stand trial for the alleged atrocities he committed. The international community has closely monitored this case, given the significance of upholding international law, particularly in cases involving suspected war criminals.
