In a shocking declaration on Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans for the United States to assume control of the Gaza Strip, while simultaneously advocating for the permanent displacement of its Palestinian residents. The announcement was made during a joint press conference at the White House with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who quickly endorsed the plan, calling it a “higher-level approach” to the long-standing conflict.

U.S. Ownership of Gaza Trump outlined his vision, stating, “The U.S. will take over the Gaza Strip and we’ll do a good job with it too. We’ll own it and be responsible for dismantling all the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons, level the site, and create economic development that will supply unlimited numbers of jobs and housing for the people of the area.”

He further argued that Gaza has been a “symbol of death and destruction for decades” and that allowing the current population to remain and rebuild would be counterproductive. Instead, he proposed relocating its 1.8 million residents to unspecified locations worldwide, suggesting that “many countries with humanitarian hearts” would be willing to accept them.

“It could be 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, numerous sites or one large site,” Trump remarked vaguely. “But the people will be able to live in comfort and peace. They’re going to have peace, not shot at, killed, and destroyed like this civilization of wonderful people have had to endure.”

Potential Military Involvement When pressed on whether this meant deploying U.S. troops to Gaza, Trump did not rule it out. “If it’s necessary, we’ll do that. We’re gonna take over that piece and develop it, create thousands and thousands of jobs. It will be something the entire Middle East can be very proud of.”

Trump portrayed Gaza’s transformation as an opportunity for regional stability. “I see a long-term ownership position and bringing great stability to that part of the Middle East. Everybody I’ve spoken to—this was not a decision made lightly—everybody loves the idea of the U.S. owning that piece of land.”

He described Gaza as “a hellhole—before the bombing started, frankly,” but envisioned it as a potential “Riviera of the Middle East.” He insisted that under U.S. stewardship, the territory could become an “international, unbelievable place” for people of all backgrounds, including Palestinians.

Netanyahu’s Endorsement Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu immediately supported the proposal, stating, “President Trump is taking it to a much higher level. He sees a different future for that piece of land that has been the focus of so much terrorism and attacks against us, so many trials and tribulations. He has a different idea and it’s worth paying attention to this.”

Implications for the Middle East Trump’s announcement overshadowed his additional comments on Israel’s potential annexation of the West Bank, which he promised to decide on within four weeks. The President also hinted at increased military action should negotiations over hostages fail. “If we don’t get all the hostages, it will make us somewhat more violent, I’ll tell you that, because they would have broken their word.”
