Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump engaged in a significant phone call on Wednesday, which lasted about an hour and a half, covering a wide range of topics, with a major focus on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Both Moscow and Washington confirmed the details of the conversation, which also touched on the Middle East, energy issues, and the exchange of citizens between the two nations.

The call, described by Trump as “lengthy and highly productive,” covered not only the Ukraine crisis but also discussions on artificial intelligence, the power of the U.S. dollar, and global energy concerns. Trump posted on his Truth social media platform, detailing that the two leaders agreed on the urgent need to end the conflict in Ukraine and pursue a peaceful resolution.

Trump emphasized the need for an immediate halt to hostilities, while Putin underscored the importance of addressing the root causes of the conflict to ensure lasting peace. Both leaders agreed to begin negotiations “immediately” with their respective teams. The U.S. delegation for the talks will include key officials such as CIA Director, Secretary of State, and National Security Advisor. Trump also revealed that he would soon contact Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to inform him about the progress of the discussions.

In a significant diplomatic gesture, President Putin invited Trump to visit Moscow, further indicating a willingness to build stronger ties between the two countries. While no specific timeline was discussed for the visit, the invitation signals potential future in-person meetings aimed at resolving major global issues.

The phone call also saw a diplomatic breakthrough with the release of Mark Fogel, a former U.S. embassy employee who had been imprisoned in Russia on charges of drug smuggling. Trump thanked Putin for facilitating Fogel’s release, and in return, the U.S. is expected to release Alexander Vinnik, a Russian national.

Reflecting on the shared history of the U.S. and Russia, Trump mentioned that the two leaders also discussed their countries’ joint efforts during World War II, reinforcing the potential for cooperation in resolving current conflicts.

This call marks an important moment in U.S.-Russia relations, with both leaders expressing a strong desire for diplomacy and peace, particularly regarding the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. The immediate start of negotiations brings hope for a potential breakthrough in resolving the long-running conflict.
