The wealth of Asia’s richest individuals took a significant hit on Monday, as markets across the region continued their downward trajectory following President Donald Trump’s announcement of new tariffs. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, the region’s top 20 billionaires saw a collective $45.9 billion evaporate, with prominent figures such as Pony Ma, Gautam Adani, and Robin Zeng among the hardest hit.
Tencent Holdings Ltd. co-founder Pony Ma saw a dramatic decline of $6.8 billion, a 12% drop in his total wealth. Meanwhile, Indian infrastructure tycoon Gautam Adani suffered a $4.2 billion loss, while Hong Kong battery magnate Robin Zeng’s fortune shrank by $4.1 billion. The losses come as the MSCI Asia Pacific Index tumbled as much as 8.5%, reflecting the widespread market turmoil across the region.
The day’s biggest loser was Lei Jun, the chairman of smartphone-maker Xiaomi Corp., who saw his wealth fall by 20%, or $7.8 billion. These losses mark a continuation of the global financial decline that began last week. The world’s 500 wealthiest individuals saw more than half a trillion dollars wiped out between Thursday’s market open and Friday’s close, marking the largest two-day drop ever recorded by the index.
Despite mounting concerns and calls for reconsideration, both President Trump and his economic team remained resolute in pushing forward with the tariffs announced on April 2. Trump, in an interview on Sunday, acknowledged the pain but defended the decision, stating, “I don’t want anything to go down, but sometimes you have to take medicine to fix something.”
The ongoing market turbulence, sparked by Trump’s policies, has sent shockwaves across global financial markets, causing significant volatility. For individuals such as Alibaba’s Jack Ma, whose wealth is tied to US-traded stocks, the impact of the tariffs is also evident, with their fortunes calculated based on Friday’s closing prices.
As the tariffs loom, the rich and markets alike face an uncertain future. The selloff, which has already been devastating, shows no sign of abating, leaving investors and billionaires grappling with the fallout.
