The World Future Council (WFC) has named Sri Lankan-born international lawyer and educator Neshan Gunasekera as its new Chief Executive Officer. Gunasekera took office in May 2025, bringing with him a wealth of experience in global governance, environmental stewardship, and intergenerational justice.
A long-standing member of the WFC, Gunasekera has contributed to the organisation since its founding in 2007. His previous work includes roles with the United Nations, the European Union, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, and the Earth Trusteeship Initiative. In 2020, he received the Weeramantry International Justice Award for his efforts in peace, sustainable development, and governance.
“This new role is a sacred duty,” said Gunasekera. “I value the trust placed in me to connect intergenerational wisdom and carry forward the mission of the World Future Council.”
Franz-Theo Gottwald, Chairperson of the WFC Supervisory Board, praised Gunasekera’s appointment: “He brings deep expertise, institutional knowledge, and a global perspective—particularly from the Global South—that will guide the WFC into a new era of impactful action and financial resilience.”
The organisation also expressed its appreciation for outgoing board members Alexandra Wandel and Marie Biermann. Wandel, who played a pivotal role since the Council’s inception, will become Executive Director of the NGO “All for One, All People for One Planet.” Biermann will serve as Managing Director of LIFE Campus in Hamburg starting April 2025.
The WFC’s leadership transition marks a renewed commitment to championing the rights of future generations and nature on the global stage.
