A newly constructed 5,000-ton North Korean destroyer suffered a serious accident during its launch at the Chongjin Shipyard, according to a report by state-run media outlet KCNA.
The warship, part of North Korea’s growing naval ambitions, failed to leave the shipway and sustained structural damage due to what officials described as “operational errors and mismanagement.” The incident occurred during a high-profile launch ceremony attended by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
Calling the failure a “serious accident” and a “criminal act” rooted in “absolute carelessness,” Kim publicly condemned those responsible and warned of consequences to be announced at next month’s meeting of the ruling Party Central Committee.
The mishap marks a rare public acknowledgment of failure by Pyongyang, especially concerning its military programs. Analysts say the incident could delay North Korea’s naval development plans and reflects internal challenges despite the regime’s efforts to project strength.
No casualties have been reported, and the full extent of the damage remains unclear. The regime has not indicated how long it might take to repair or relaunch the vessel.
The international community is closely watching North Korea’s military advancements amid heightened regional tensions and continued sanctions over its weapons programs.
