The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the recent reduction in the tariff rate on Sri Lankan exports to the United States, calling it a “constructive and important first step” toward enhancing the country’s global trade competitiveness.

The Government’s decision to reduce the tariff from 44% to 30% has been hailed as a significant move to align Sri Lanka’s export structure more closely with that of regional competitors. The Chamber emphasized that such measures are vital to improving the island nation’s access to key international markets and ensuring long-term trade growth.

In a statement released today, the Chamber urged continued diplomatic engagement with U.S. authorities to pursue a further reduction in tariffs, ideally by August 1. It noted that several regional peers are poised to benefit from even lower tariff rates, potentially challenging Sri Lanka’s competitive edge in the U.S. market.

“Progress in achieving a further reduction will be critical to strengthening Sri Lanka’s position in this key market, maintaining buyer confidence, and supporting sustained trade growth over the long term,” the Chamber said.

The Ceylon Chamber reiterated its commitment to working alongside the Government by offering industry feedback, engaging in constructive dialogue, and supporting coordinated advocacy efforts aimed at enhancing Sri Lanka’s trade prospects.
