The UK will this week host senior ministers from allied nations to develop new strategies aimed at curbing smuggling networks and combating the spread of illegal drugs. The two-day “Five Eyes” meeting, set to take place on Monday and Tuesday, marks a renewed focus on border security and organized crime.

The conference will be attended by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, who was recently appointed to the role, alongside counterparts from other intelligence-sharing nations: Kristi Noem from the United States, Gary Anandasangaree from Canada, Tony Burke from Australia, and Judith Collins from New Zealand.

The rise of right-wing political movements across “Five Eyes” countries has heightened concerns over national security and border management. In addition to addressing human trafficking and the opioid crisis, discussions are expected to focus on tackling the surge in online child sexual abuse.

In a statement from the Home Office, Mahmood emphasized the importance of international cooperation. “Rebuilding our reputation on the world stage is how we tackle serious organized crime and secure our borders,” she said. “We will agree on new measures to protect our borders with our Five Eyes partners, hitting people smugglers hard.”

This high-profile meeting will be Mahmood’s first major engagement as home secretary, following a cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Keir Starmer after the resignation of his deputy, Angela Rayner.
