Syria is set to hold its first parliamentary election under the new administration on 5 October, state news agency SANA reported Sunday.
The upcoming vote will select members of the 210-seat People’s Assembly, with ballots cast across all electoral districts. One-third of the assembly’s seats will be appointed directly by President Ahmed al Sharaa.
The new parliament is expected to lay the groundwork for a broader democratic process following the ousting of former President Bashar al Assad last December, which marked the end of nearly 14 years of civil war.
In addition to legislative duties, the assembly will play a key role in approving reforms aimed at overhauling decades of state-controlled economic policies and ratifying treaties that could redefine Syria’s foreign policy alliances.
Earlier this year, in March, Syria issued a constitutional declaration to guide the country through the interim period under Sharaa’s leadership.
