Jihad al-Shamie, the Manchester synagogue attacker, led a tangled and secretive personal life that has shocked friends, family, and the wider public. The 35-year-old, who carried out a suspected Islamist terror attack on Yom Kippur that killed two men and left three others critically injured, was reportedly obsessed with a Muslim dating app and engaged in coercive and abusive behavior toward women in his life. His hidden marriage to a Muslim convert and disturbing “rape fantasies” have now come to light, painting a dark picture of the man behind the attack.

Al-Shamie had been living with his mother in Prestwich, Greater Manchester, following the breakdown of his marriage six months prior. He was reportedly consumed by the dating app Muzmatch, where he used false names to message women, and encouraged an ex-girlfriend to watch violent and extremist videos. She said he tried to groom her according to his radicalized worldview, often insisting that her faith had been taught incorrectly. She described him as abusive, controlling, and frighteningly open about his violent and sexual fantasies.

Friends revealed that al-Shamie had secretly married a Muslim convert, an NHS nurse, possibly in a private Islamic law ceremony, which only came to light after the attack. The woman, described by acquaintances as deeply religious and committed to her faith, had been through a previous relationship with a married Pakistani man online. Friends say she is devastated by the revelation that she was involved with someone capable of such violence.

Born in Syria and granted UK citizenship in 2006, al-Shamie dropped out of university and developed a pattern of self-destructive behavior, including smoking potent cannabis, playing violent video games, and running into trouble with his parents. Neighbors described him as a reclusive figure, often in flip-flops and pajamas, lifting weights in his garage, and irritating residents with careless parking.

His employment history was equally unsettled, having worked briefly as an English tutor and computer programmer, before ultimately being listed as unemployed and entering a government debt relief order. The dark details of his private life, combined with his extremist leanings, have shocked the Manchester community, especially those who knew him socially or through relationships.

Al-Shamie was shot dead by police outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation following the knife and vehicle attack. Four people remain in custody following raids in Crumpsall and Bolton on suspicion of involvement in the terror act. The unfolding revelations about his secretive relationships, disturbing fantasies, and obsessive behavior paint a portrait of a man whose private life was as dangerous and chaotic as the public violence he ultimately unleashed.
