The Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez, denounced today the coercive measures being exerted by the United States ahead of the upcoming United Nations vote on the resolution calling for the lifting of the decades-long blockade against Cuba.
Speaking at a press conference in Havana, Rodríguez stated, “We have reliable information about the intimidating and deceptive pressures that the United States government is exerting on several countries, especially in Latin America and Europe.”
The Foreign Minister warned that Washington is attempting to compel these nations to change their historically consistent stance in favor of ending the blockade. He added that the U.S. strategy aims to distort Cuba’s image, influence third countries’ positions, and create a climate of disinformation, confusion, and hopelessness.
“These actions are intended to generate fear and insecurity among United Nations member states,” Rodríguez said, describing the U.S. campaign as “slanderous, disrespectful, mendacious, and manipulative.”
Rodríguez presented evidence of a discrediting campaign by the United States, framed under the false premise that Cuba poses a threat to Washington. He highlighted the international support for Cuba in 2024, when the UN General Assembly approved the resolution to end the economic, commercial, and financial blockade with 187 votes in favor, only two against (the United States and Israel), and one abstention (the Republic of Moldova).
The resolution will once again be debated at the UN on October 28 and 29, marking the thirty-third occasion the international community will address the more than six-decade-long economic, commercial, and financial siege imposed on the Caribbean nation.
The press conference concluded with a statement from the Cuban Embassy emphasizing Havana’s commitment to continue defending its sovereignty and denouncing any external attempts to interfere in international decisions regarding the blockade.
