Colombian President Gustavo Petro has sparked a political and media storm after releasing his full bank and credit card statements in an effort to rebut claims from former US President Donald Trump that he is involved in drug trafficking. The disclosures, reported by Times UK, confirmed that Petro’s official income over the past three years—approximately £270,000—falls far short of any narco fortune. However, they also exposed a surprising appetite for high-end shopping and late-night detours, including purchases at Gucci, Ralph Lauren, Prada, Apple, and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Most striking among the revelations was a small but conspicuous €40 charge at the Ménage strip club in Lisbon, incurred on the same day Petro visited a Gucci store in Portugal during what his official diary listed as a “working visit” to Spain. The president, Colombia’s first left-wing leader, acknowledged the club visit in a teasing post on X, saying he would “someday explain” the expenditure, while adding that he saw no need to pay for sex “while I am still capable of seduction and poetry.”

The financial disclosures have fueled criticism from Colombia’s political opposition, who claim the purchases reflect hypocrisy and undermine presidential dignity. Conservative pre-candidate Vicky Dávila stated, “There is just no presidential dignity left,” as the story gained traction in domestic media. The episode has also drawn attention to Petro’s family, particularly his wife Verónica Alcocer, who was recently sanctioned by the United States alongside their eldest son over alleged drug trafficking links—claims both vehemently deny.

Petro’s defense of transparency has extended to a high-profile £2.7 billion fighter jet deal with Swedish company Saab, in which he has requested that all contract details be publicly disclosed. While the strip club charge may appear minor, it has become emblematic of the scrutiny facing Petro, highlighting the tension between his leftist austerity rhetoric and his personal lifestyle. Times UK noted that the combination of luxury shopping and nightlife excursions has turned a routine financial disclosure into a scandal capturing global attention.

Despite the embarrassment, Petro continues to portray himself as a leader committed to transparency, insisting that both his finances and government contracts are open to public scrutiny. The unfolding controversy underscores the delicate balance for world leaders whose private indulgences collide with their public image, particularly in politically charged environments.
