Thailand has approved a major air-defense acquisition, signing a $107 million deal to purchase Israel’s Barak MX system to protect Royal Thai Air Force bases, according to reporting originally highlighted by Haaretz. The contract, valued at roughly 3.44 billion baht, covers a single battery produced by Israel Aerospace Industries and marks one of the country’s most significant defense procurements in recent years.
The Barak MX system is designed to intercept a wide range of aerial threats, including aircraft, drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles, at ranges of up to 150 kilometers. Its operational track record has grown in recent conflicts, with Israel’s land and naval variants credited with intercepting dozens of drones launched from Yemen, Iran and Lebanon. Defence Blog, which also covered the Thai purchase, noted that both the Royal Thai Army and Navy are examining the possibility of acquiring additional Barak units for their own defense networks.
Israel has steadily expanded global sales of the Barak family of air-defense systems, supplying them in recent years to countries such as Cyprus, India, Azerbaijan and Morocco. Satellite imagery released in late 2022 confirmed deployments of the system in the United Arab Emirates, underscoring the platform’s presence across the Middle East. Slovakia was also reported in 2024 to be planning a purchase, while Colombia canceled its intended order after severing diplomatic ties with Israel over the war in Gaza.
Thailand’s decision comes amid broader regional and international shifts in air-defense strategy. Greece is currently in advanced talks with Israel Aerospace Industries and Rafael as part of its “Achilles Shield” program, a sweeping modernization effort built around a multilayered defensive framework. Reports in Greece estimate the overall program could reach approximately 3.5 billion euros, or around $4 billion, reflecting a rising global demand for systems capable of countering increasingly complex aerial threats.
For Bangkok, the Barak MX marks a significant technological upgrade aimed at reinforcing the security of its air bases. The purchase signals Thailand’s deepening interest in modern air-defense solutions as emerging threats reshape military planning across Asia and beyond.
