Lionel Messi’s much-anticipated “GOAT India Tour” began in chaos on Saturday when fans at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata rioted after failing to see the Argentine football superstar. Spectators hurled bottles, tore up chairs, and stormed the pitch after Messi was rushed out shortly after the event began, according to the Hindustan Times.
Fans expressed frustration over what they called “terrible management,” with many unable to catch a glimpse of the football icon. Messi, on his first visit to India in 14 years, is scheduled to appear in Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi, with tickets largely sold out. Football, while overshadowed by cricket in India, has a growing following among younger audiences, particularly in West Bengal, Kerala, and the northeast.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee described the incident as “deeply disturbing” and “shocking,” announcing the formation of a committee to investigate the mismanagement, assign accountability, and recommend measures for future events. India has a history of mass gatherings turning deadly due to inadequate crowd control, and authorities face intense scrutiny over the handling of high-profile events like Messi’s visit.
