Israel deploys Iron Beam laser defense amid growing doubts

New laser interception system enters IDF service, but operational limits raise questions about battlefield impact

Israel’s defense ministry has delivered the first Iron Beam laser interception system to the Israel Defense Forces, formally introducing Rafael Advanced Defense Systems’ long-promised directed-energy weapon into military service. The move marks a milestone in Israel’s air defense ambitions, as officials present Iron Beam as a low-cost complement to missile-based systems such as Iron Dome.

Iron Beam is designed to fire a high-powered laser, estimated at 100 to 150 kilowatts, in short bursts at aerial threats including drones, mortar shells, rockets and potentially even missiles. Each interception is said to cost only a few dollars per shot, a fraction of the price of traditional interceptors, making the system attractive in conflicts involving sustained barrages.

However, the system’s capabilities come with significant constraints. Its effective range is limited to roughly 10 kilometers and depends heavily on favorable weather conditions. Clear skies are essential, as clouds, dust or sandstorms can degrade or entirely negate performance. Against fast-moving missile threats, this leaves an interception window of only a few seconds, sharply narrowing its practical use.

Coverage also remains a challenge. Multiple Iron Beam batteries are required to protect a single area, and the system must regularly pause firing to cool its laser, reducing its ability to sustain continuous defense during intense attacks. Now that Iron Beam has entered operational service, analysts expect adversaries to explore countermeasures, including coatings or materials designed to reflect or disperse laser energy.

Although first unveiled at an air show in 2014 and reportedly tested in combat conditions against Hamas rocket fire in late 2023, Iron Beam was notably absent during Israel’s defense against Iran’s increasingly destructive missile attacks in 2024 and 2025. Its delayed appearance in frontline use has fueled skepticism about its readiness for large-scale, high-intensity warfare.

Another vulnerability lies in its reliance on electrical infrastructure. Iron Beam depends on stable power generation, making it susceptible to attacks on power plants. During the June war, Iran struck a power station and refinery facilities in Haifa, highlighting the risk. Israel’s electricity production is highly concentrated, with the Orot Rabin power station in Hadera alone generating around 20 percent of the country’s power. If such facilities were taken offline, Iron Beam’s defensive promise could quickly be rendered ineffective.
