Sri Lankan Parliament

Sri Lanka’s Parliament is taking decisive steps to address reports of drug, alcohol, and cigarette use among its staff. Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne has instructed parliamentary officials to investigate and take strict action against employees found violating regulations on the premises.

The move follows allegations that staff in multiple departments, including the canteen, were secretly using alcohol, drugs—specifically “ice”—and cigarettes while on Parliament grounds. An internal investigation, conducted under the Speaker’s directives, confirmed that several employees were involved in such activities.

Sources within the parliamentary service also reported that some individuals had been importing and selling foreign-manufactured cigarettes on-site. Those identified as using illegal substances had previously been removed from service, according to a senior parliamentary official.

Speaker Wickramaratne has reportedly criticized the heads of relevant departments for allowing the situation to escalate and has emphasized the need for immediate corrective measures. The investigation is ongoing, and further disciplinary action is expected.
