SpaceX Sets 2027 Target for Starship Satellite Launch in High-Stakes IPO Push

SpaceX says it expects its flagship Starship rocket to be ready by mid-2027 to launch a new fleet of upgraded Starlink satellites, marking a pivotal step in the company’s commercial expansion and a crucial milestone ahead of a potential record-breaking initial public offering.

Speaking at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, senior executives from SpaceX provided their clearest timetable yet for the debut of the next-generation rocket. Michael Nicolls, senior vice-president for Starlink, said Starship would be capable of deploying a new constellation of mobile communications satellites beginning in “mid-2027.”

A key test flight is expected within the next four to six weeks, according to SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell. The upcoming launch will follow the company’s 11th Starship test flight in October, which successfully lifted off from Texas, flew for more than an hour and landed in the Indian Ocean. The next phase of testing is seen as critical in validating the rocket’s performance and reliability before it begins carrying commercial payloads.

The timeline carries significant weight for prospective investors. SpaceX is reportedly preparing for an IPO later this year that could value the company at up to $1.5 trillion, potentially making it the largest stock market debut in history. Starship’s success is central to the company’s pitch to Wall Street, as reusable heavy-lift vehicles promise to dramatically lower launch costs and reshape the economics of space travel.

Designed to be fully reusable, Starship is expected to carry up to 250 metric tonnes, offering major improvements in both capacity and cost efficiency over SpaceX’s existing Falcon rockets. The expanded lift capability will enable the rapid deployment of larger batches of satellites, accelerating the growth of the Starlink communications network.

“We’ll be able to launch more than 50 satellites on every launch using Starship, and we’ll begin launching in mid-2027,” Nicolls said. “With this, Starship will be able to deploy the constellation very quickly.” He added that SpaceX aims to deploy 1,200 satellites within six months of Starship’s first operational mission, forming a new constellation with enhanced networking capabilities.

Starlink Mobile, the company’s satellite-based connectivity service, recently surpassed 10 million monthly users. Nicolls said the company is targeting 25 million users by the end of this year. Starlink currently partners with telecom operators such as T-Mobile in the United States and Virgin Media O2 in the United Kingdom to provide coverage in areas where terrestrial networks are limited or unavailable.

Nicolls suggested that, in some regions, satellite connectivity could eventually reduce or even eliminate the need for traditional ground-based infrastructure. The rapid expansion of Starlink’s network is expected to strengthen SpaceX’s recurring revenue streams, a factor likely to attract strong investor interest.

Beyond commercial ambitions, Starship remains central to Elon Musk’s long-term vision of human space exploration. The rocket is designed to support missions for NASA and to transport astronauts to the Moon and eventually to Mars. Shotwell described both destinations as core priorities for the company.

“Elon has talked a lot about the Moon recently, but Mars is his passion,” she said. “Let’s call them co-priorities.”
