Pop superstar Britney Spears was arrested on Wednesday evening by the California Highway Patrol on suspicion of drunk-driving in southern California, authorities confirmed. The 44-year-old singer was pulled over at approximately 9:30 p.m., booked at 3 a.m., and released shortly after 6 a.m. She is scheduled to appear in court on May 4, with her occupation listed in official reports as “celebrity.”

Spears, once one of the world’s most prominent pop stars, first rose to fame as a teenager with her 1998 hit Baby One More Time. Her career has been punctuated by highly publicized personal struggles, including a mental health crisis that led to a head-shaving incident in 2007, the loss of custody of her two sons, and a lengthy conservatorship that ended in 2021. Despite stepping away from live performances since 2018, Spears remains a figure of global media attention.

A representative for Spears addressed the incident in a statement, calling it “unfortunate” and “completely inexcusable,” while emphasizing the singer’s intention to comply with the law and take steps toward personal change. The statement highlighted the support of her children and loved ones, describing plans to ensure her wellbeing and help her navigate this difficult period.

Spears’ recent life has included high-profile business moves, such as selling the rights to her back catalogue to the music publishing company Primary Wave for a deal reportedly worth $200 million. She also went through a divorce from actor and model Sam Asghari in 2024, two years after their 2022 wedding. Observers say the latest incident marks a new chapter in Spears’ ongoing struggles with personal and public pressures.
