Following his participation in the “Transforming Transportation” Conference 2026.03, held on March 10–11 in Washington DC and organized by the World Bank team, Sri Lankan Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Anura Karunathilaka met with key U.S. officials to discuss cooperation in Sri Lanka’s ports and civil aviation sectors. The conference addressed civil airlines, harbors, and global transportation trends, providing insights into financial facilities and innovations shaping the industry.
During the meeting, Minister Karunathilaka engaged with S. Paul Kapur, the Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs (SCA), who was sworn in on October 22, 2025. Kapur, a noted academic and security expert previously associated with the Naval Postgraduate School and the Hoover Institution, was joined by other senior officials from the same desk. Discussions focused on strengthening Sri Lanka’s critical infrastructure, with an emphasis on trade facilitation, aviation development, and harbor management.
Also present were Dr. Prasanna Gunasena, Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways, and W. W. S. Mr. Mangala, Secretary of the Ministry of Ports and Civil Aviation. Officials reviewed trends from the global transport conference and explored collaborative measures to modernize Sri Lanka’s ports and airports, enhance safety and security, and attract foreign investment.
The talks underscored Sri Lanka’s strategic role in the Indo-Pacific region and highlighted mutual interest in long-term cooperation. By adopting advanced technologies, implementing best practices, and accessing international financial support, the government aims to position Sri Lanka as a competitive hub for trade and logistics while contributing to regional stability.
