In Sri Lanka’s Mannar district, a disturbing incident has highlighted the dangers faced by migratory birds, with flamingos dying after becoming entangled in high-voltage wind power cables near the Vankalai Bird Sanctuary. The tragedy occurred as these birds, which migrate from abroad, arrived on the island during their seasonal movement.
According to wildlife officials, three flamingos were caught in the cables. Two of them died as a result of the entanglement, while the third sustained severe injuries. The injured bird was rescued and is now under the care of the Department of Wildlife Conservation in Mannar, where it is receiving medical treatment as efforts continue to save its life.
Mannar is currently in the midst of its migratory bird season, attracting large numbers of both local and international visitors who come to witness species such as flamingos in their natural environment. The deaths have raised concerns about the safety of these birds, particularly as they navigate areas where human-made structures intersect with their habitats.
