A federal judge has temporarily halted the Trump administration’s effort to classify Anthropic as a “supply chain risk,” granting the AI company an injunction against orders that would have forced federal agencies to cut ties with it. Judge Rita F. Lin of the Northern District of California ruled that the government’s designation overstepped legal bounds and violated the company’s free speech protections. During the proceedings, Lin described the government’s actions as appearing “like an attempt to cripple Anthropic.”

The dispute began last month when Anthropic imposed restrictions on how its AI models could be used, including prohibiting applications in autonomous weapons systems or mass surveillance. The Pentagon and other agencies rejected these limits, ultimately labeling the company a security risk—a classification usually reserved for foreign entities—and directing federal offices to sever business relationships. In response, Anthropic filed a lawsuit challenging the orders, arguing that they were retaliatory and punitive.

The White House publicly criticized Anthropic, calling it a “radical-left, woke company” that posed a threat to national security. CEO Dario Amodei countered that the government’s actions were retaliatory. Following Judge Lin’s ruling, Anthropic issued a statement emphasizing gratitude for the court’s swift action and reaffirming its commitment to collaborating with government partners to advance safe and reliable AI. The decision marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing tension between private AI developers and federal oversight, with implications for the future governance of emerging technologies.
