China’s Concept Car Revolution Redefines the Future of Mobility in Beijing

At Auto China 2026, leading Chinese automakers and tech giants unveil production-ready visions blending AI, culture, and performance, signaling a global shift in automotive innovation

At the 2026 Beijing Auto China, the world’s largest automotive exhibition, the traditional boundaries between concept fantasy and production reality appear to be dissolving. A total of 71 concept vehicles were showcased, most of them from mainland Chinese automakers, offering not just futuristic design studies but increasingly credible previews of what could soon appear on public roads. Unlike previous years, where concept cars often existed as distant dreams of mobility, this year’s lineup emphasized practicality, manufacturability, and rapid technological integration, signaling a decisive shift in how the global auto industry imagines its future.

Among the many vehicles drawing attention, Chery’s Tiggo X emerged as one of the most production-ready interpretations of the SUV segment’s next evolution. Stretching over 5.2 meters with a commanding wheelbase nearing 3.1 meters, the model is designed as a versatile family-oriented SUV with flexible seating configurations ranging from five to seven seats. Available in both internal combustion and plug-in hybrid formats, the Tiggo X prioritizes safety and comfort, featuring a body structure composed of 85 percent high-strength steel. Inside, its design language leans toward domestic comfort and practicality, with features such as a reconfigured glovebox that functions as a partitioned drawer and rear cabin amenities including a ceiling-mounted entertainment display and foldable tray tables. The vehicle reflects a broader industry trend in China: large, intelligent, and highly adaptable family mobility solutions.

At the opposite end of the spectrum sits the Xiaomi Vision GT, a hypercar that blends gaming heritage with cutting-edge automotive engineering. Developed in collaboration with Polyphony Digital, the creators of the Gran Turismo racing franchise, the vehicle represents Xiaomi’s first participation in the prestigious Vision Gran Turismo project, a platform that has previously hosted design contributions from brands such as Ferrari, Bugatti, and Aston Martin. The Vision GT is engineered for extreme performance, accelerating from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in just over a second and generating massive downforce to stabilize high-speed cornering.

Yet its innovation extends beyond speed. The cabin is powered by Xiaomi’s Super Xiaoai voice assistant and its MiMo large language model, integrating biometric feedback from connected wearables such as Xiaomi smartwatches. This system actively monitors the driver’s physical condition and adjusts cabin settings accordingly, merging performance driving with real-time health awareness. Kazunori Yamauchi, producer of Gran Turismo, described the vehicle as visually exceptional from every angle, praising its balance of aggression and elegance. His remarks underscored Xiaomi’s ambition to position itself not just as a tech company entering automotive production, but as a design-driven participant in high-performance mobility.

Geely’s Galaxy Light Gen 2 concept reflects a different ambition: the fusion of cultural identity and artificial intelligence. As the successor to the first-generation model introduced three years earlier, the vehicle integrates traditional Chinese aesthetics into its exterior and interior design language. Elements inspired by ancient architectural eaves and symbolic imagery such as a tiger’s focused gaze define its exterior, while its taillight design evokes a rising sun against a star-filled sky. Inside, the vehicle transforms cultural references into sensory experiences, with an audio system inspired by Hangzhou’s West Lake and lighting systems that simulate natural shifts in daylight.

Beyond aesthetics, Geely’s focus lies heavily on artificial intelligence. The vehicle’s AI-assisted driving system is designed for comprehensive use cases, from urban commuting to automated parking. Inside the cabin, an AI agent named “Eva” is capable of interpreting driver emotions and proactively executing tasks, signaling a growing trend in emotionally responsive vehicle ecosystems. In this vision, the car is not only a machine but an adaptive companion capable of reacting to human mood and behavior.

The Roewe Jiayue 07 concept, developed by SAIC in collaboration with ByteDance’s Volcano Engine platform, further illustrates how Chinese automakers are integrating digital ecosystems into mobility. Positioned as a five-seat SUV tailored for modern families, the vehicle is powered by the Doubao 2.0 large model series, enabling advanced interaction systems capable of memory retention, multitasking, and predictive assistance. The system can detect driver fatigue, automatically adjusting seating and climate controls, or identify the presence of children to activate specialized safety and entertainment modes.

Inside, the Jiayue 07 emphasizes domestic comfort, featuring amenities such as a refrigerator, television, and sofa-style seating. Its exterior includes semi-hidden door handles and streaming digital rearview mirrors, combining aerodynamics with digital functionality. With mass production scheduled for next month, the model exemplifies how quickly concept-level technologies are transitioning into real-world products in China’s rapidly accelerating automotive sector.

Completing the lineup is the Avatr Vision Xpectra, the first concept vehicle from Chongqing-based EV brand Avatr, supported by a powerful alliance between Changan Auto, Huawei, and battery leader CATL. Making its Asian debut at the show, the vehicle draws inspiration from the Chinese philosophical concept of chi, or vital energy, aiming to create what designers describe as an emotionally intelligent companion. Its interior features a “prism light and shadow” cabin, where transparent materials and dynamic ambient lighting create an immersive, almost architectural experience of space.

Floating seats and a futuristic layout emphasize minimalism and emotional resonance rather than mechanical presence. Avatr has ambitious expansion plans, aiming to launch at least 17 new models by 2030 and enter 50 global markets. The Vision Xpectra is expected to serve as a design and technological blueprint for this next phase of growth, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to blending emotion, intelligence, and mobility.

Taken together, the vehicles showcased at Auto China 2026 reflect a broader transformation within the global automotive industry, one in which China is no longer merely participating but actively shaping the direction of innovation. As reported by El País, the convergence of artificial intelligence, cultural storytelling, and industrial design signals a shift away from purely mechanical engineering toward emotionally intelligent, software-defined mobility systems. In this evolving landscape, the car is no longer just a mode of transport but an integrated digital environment, cultural artifact, and adaptive companion for an increasingly complex world.
