US Graduates Boo Tech Evangelists as Campus Tensions Over Artificial Intelligence Erupt

High-profile figures including Eric Schmidt face public rejection at US graduation ceremonies, exposing a widening generational rift over artificial intelligence, its promises, and its perceived threat to young people’s future.

A series of US university graduation ceremonies has turned unexpectedly contentious after prominent speakers advocating for artificial intelligence were met with boos, jeers, and visible student hostility, highlighting a growing cultural backlash among young graduates toward the technology often described by industry leaders as the defining revolution of their era.

At the University of Central Florida, an executive in the real estate sector, Gloria Caulfield, attempted to reassure graduating students that artificial intelligence represented “the next industrial revolution.” Instead of applause, many in the audience responded with loud booing, interrupting her speech and forcing her to pause mid-address. Confused, she briefly turned to event organizers before continuing, asking whether she had “touched a nerve” among the graduates. The moment quickly spread across social media, where viewers interpreted the reaction as symbolic of deeper tensions between Silicon Valley optimism and student anxiety about the future of work.

Similar scenes unfolded at the University of Arizona, where Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, delivered a commencement address urging students to prepare for a world fundamentally reshaped by artificial intelligence. Schmidt argued that AI was not a speculative trend but an irreversible force that would shape every career path and industry. “The question is not whether AI will shape the world,” he told graduates. “It already is. The question is whether you will help shape it.” His remarks, however, were repeatedly interrupted by boos from sections of the audience, suggesting that many students were unwilling to embrace the optimistic framing offered by one of the technology’s most influential early executives.

The incidents reflect a broader and more complicated relationship between Generation Z students and artificial intelligence. While younger people are often assumed to be more comfortable with new technologies, recent polling suggests their attitudes toward AI are becoming increasingly conflicted. A Gallup survey published in April found that enthusiasm for artificial intelligence among US Gen Z respondents has declined sharply over the past year, dropping to 22 percent, while the proportion expressing anger toward the technology has risen to 31 percent. Anxiety levels remain high at 42 percent, indicating that uncertainty rather than enthusiasm may now define youth attitudes toward AI.

At the same time, global research by Pew Research Center suggests that younger people are still, on average, less fearful of artificial intelligence than older generations in many countries. However, the United States appears to be an exception, with young Americans reporting levels of concern nearly equal to older adults. This convergence points to a uniquely charged environment in the US, where debates over automation, job displacement, and education are intersecting with broader political and cultural distrust of large technology companies.

In several ceremonies, students voiced specific concerns about how artificial intelligence is already affecting their education. At the University of Central Florida, a recent controversy over a course titled “Art of AI” became a flashpoint for frustration. Some students argued that they were paying high tuition fees to develop practical skills, not to rely on generative tools that might ultimately replace those very skills. This sentiment was echoed in informal discussions across campuses, where graduates expressed fear that entry-level jobs in fields such as communications, design, and even engineering could be significantly reduced or reshaped by automation.

The backlash was not limited to Schmidt. At Middle Tennessee State University, music industry executive Scott Borchetta also faced interruptions during his speech when he warned that artificial intelligence was rapidly transforming creative industries. Comparing AI’s impact to earlier disruptions caused by streaming and social media, he argued that the technology was fundamentally rewriting how music is produced and consumed. When some students reacted negatively, Borchetta departed from his prepared remarks, urging them to treat AI as a tool rather than a threat and warning that ignoring technological change could leave graduates behind in an increasingly competitive job market.

The tone of resistance has also been amplified by broader campus dynamics and political undertones. In Schmidt’s case, anticipation of protests was already present before the ceremony. Reports indicated that student groups had circulated flyers encouraging attendees to boo his appearance. Schmidt has also been a controversial figure beyond the AI debate, with public scrutiny intensifying in recent years due to legal allegations involving a former associate, as well as references in unrelated high-profile investigations, contributing to a more polarized reception of his public appearances.

Meanwhile, in a separate graduation ceremony at Arizona State University, actor Harrison Ford was selected as an honorary speaker, a contrast that some observers noted as reflecting universities’ attempts to balance technological messaging with broader cultural figures. University officials defended speaker selections as recognition of global contributions and leadership, emphasizing philanthropic and scientific collaborations that support academic research initiatives.

Underlying these confrontations is a widening disconnect between how artificial intelligence is presented by industry leaders and how it is perceived by many young adults preparing to enter the workforce. Tech executives frequently describe AI as a transformative opportunity capable of unlocking productivity, creativity, and economic growth. Yet for many graduates, those same promises are inseparable from fears of job insecurity, devaluation of education, and an uncertain professional future.

The generational divide is further complicated by conflicting survey results. While some international studies suggest younger populations are less alarmed by artificial intelligence than older groups, the United States shows a narrowing gap, with concern levels converging across age demographics. Analysts suggest this may reflect the country’s unique position at the center of AI development, where public debate is more immediate and direct exposure to industry disruption is already visible in education and entry-level employment markets.

As artificial intelligence continues to expand into fields ranging from media and law to healthcare and finance, universities are increasingly becoming arenas where its societal implications are debated in real time. The emotional responses seen at graduation ceremonies suggest that for many students, AI is no longer an abstract technological advancement, but a force already shaping their identity, prospects, and expectations.

Whether the recent boos represent a fleeting moment of campus protest or the beginning of a sustained generational resistance remains uncertain. What is clear, however, is that the optimism often voiced by technology leaders is no longer being received uncritically by those who will live most directly with the consequences of the AI-driven transformation.
