Elon Musk is often described by long-time associates as a man with multiple identities, each reflecting a different phase of his work, ambition, and leadership style. That characterization forms the backbone of a detailed portrait published by Die Zeit, which traces the trajectory of SpaceX and its founder from fragile startup beginnings to the center of a rapidly accelerating commercial space race. The account situates Musk not only as an industrial entrepreneur but as a figure whose ambitions increasingly extend beyond Earth, toward a future of interplanetary infrastructure.

The immediate backdrop to the story is a series of closely timed rocket tests that underscored both the volatility and progress of the new space industry. On May 22, SpaceX tested its Starship system, described as the largest rocket ever built at more than 120 meters in length. One engine failed during launch from Boca Chica, Texas, and the separated booster later fell uncontrollably into the sea. Yet the upper stage completed complex maneuvers in space and returned as planned. Musk and his team celebrated the outcome as a partial success in a development process where setbacks are routine.

Just days later, SpaceX’s main competitor Blue Origin, founded by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, attempted to launch its own heavy rocket, New Glenn, in Florida. The test ended in an explosion. For SpaceX, the contrast was significant, particularly ahead of an anticipated public offering. Musk responded publicly with a short message describing the failure as “very unfortunate,” adding that rockets are difficult. The episode reflected a recurring pattern in the commercial space race, where progress and failure among rivals often intersect within days.

According to Die Zeit, Musk’s ambitions extend far beyond competition with other billionaires. The report describes a long-term plan to move critical infrastructure of data and telecommunications into space while ultimately enabling human settlement on Mars. Musk has repeatedly argued that a multi-planetary civilization may be necessary for human survival in the event of a catastrophe on Earth. Former NASA Mars mission chief Scott Hubbard, quoted in the report, compares Musk to industrial pioneer Henry Ford, noting both “great achievements and immense character flaws.”

Hubbard’s recollections trace Musk’s early visits at the start of the millennium, when SpaceX was only beginning to take shape. At the time, Musk was described as a hesitant but intense entrepreneur who became sharply focused when discussing ideas tied to his vision of Mars. He spoke, Hubbard recalled, of planting a rose on the red planet as a symbolic demonstration that life there was possible. Hubbard advised him instead to prioritize reducing the cost and risk of spaceflight, a suggestion aligned with the practical constraints of early commercial space exploration.

SpaceX was founded in 2002 after Musk’s earlier success with PayPal. From its earliest phase, the company operated under extreme time pressure and financial risk. Engineers recalled an atmosphere in which rapid progress was prioritized above all else, even as budgets tightened and early rocket failures nearly ended the venture. After three failed launches, SpaceX faced near bankruptcy before Musk financed another attempt. In 2008, the Falcon 1 successfully reached orbit, marking the first privately developed rocket to do so. A NASA contract worth billions followed shortly after, stabilizing the company’s future.

The Die Zeit report highlights that SpaceX’s early success was tied to broader shifts in the aerospace industry. The end of the Cold War and the decline of NASA’s Space Shuttle program opened opportunities for private companies to enter a field previously dominated by state actors and large contractors. Musk’s approach diverged from traditional aerospace models by focusing on vertical integration and reusable rocket systems designed for rapid production.

Former SpaceX engineers describe a culture defined by urgency and relentless problem-solving. The company’s early development phase was marked by exhaustion and repeated technical failures, but also by breakthroughs that rapidly changed its position in the industry. Over time, SpaceX evolved into a central player in global satellite deployment, with its Starlink network expanding to more than 10,000 satellites and becoming one of its primary revenue sources.

At the center of the narrative is what Die Zeit describes as “the Musk method,” a combination of extreme ambition, rapid iteration, and a willingness to absorb repeated failure. The report notes that Musk often prioritizes the most difficult technical challenges first, rather than incrementally solving smaller problems. This approach, while accelerating innovation in some areas, also creates operational complexity across his companies.

The article also highlights internal and external assessments of Musk’s leadership style. Hans Königsmann, a former senior SpaceX engineer and one of the company’s earliest employees, recalls a founder who demanded immediate solutions and applied constant pressure on engineering teams. While acknowledging risks in advanced systems like Starship, Königsmann suggests that technical challenges remain more significant than organizational ones. He also notes that Musk himself represents a variable risk factor, particularly when external constraints limit his ability to operate freely.

Despite these concerns, Königsmann expresses confidence in SpaceX’s trajectory, noting that earlier skepticism about rapid advancements proved incorrect. The development of reusable rockets and large-scale satellite networks exceeded expectations within a relatively short timeframe. However, unresolved technical hurdles remain, including controlled landings of Starship and future lunar missions.

Die Zeit also emphasizes Musk’s expanding corporate ecosystem. His ventures span electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, tunneling, neurotechnology, and social media, forming a network of interconnected companies. Recent developments include the integration of his AI company xAI into SpaceX structures and speculation about potential mergers with Tesla. Together, these moves point toward a consolidated industrial system aimed at producing both software and hardware for future space-based and terrestrial infrastructure.

Former NASA officials and industry observers cited in the report describe Musk as having evolved through multiple phases. One early version is portrayed as a focused engineer-entrepreneur building foundational capabilities at SpaceX. A second phase reflects rapid expansion across multiple companies, accompanied by increasing strain and diversification. A third phase is described as more controversial, marked by erratic behavior and public confrontation, including political and corporate controversies.
