A Sri Lankan man who had recently returned to the country after working in South Korea died by suicide while appearing on a Facebook live broadcast, in an incident reported from the Thalgahawatta area of Karandeniya.
The deceased has been identified as 35-year-old Dinesh Wijewardena, a resident of Karandeniya. The incident occurred on the night of the 12th, while he was connected with friends through a live video session on Facebook.
According to reports, Wijewardena initially appeared calm and friendly during the broadcast, smiling and engaging in conversation with people who had joined the live stream. Those watching the session were reportedly unaware of what would happen moments later.
While the live broadcast was still active, he died by suicide by hanging himself, leaving viewers shocked by the sudden turn of events. The incident was captured during the ongoing Facebook stream.
The tragedy became further distressing when his mother arrived at the location shortly afterward. Footage from the live broadcast reportedly showed her reaching the scene and breaking down in grief.
The body of Wijewardena has been placed at the mortuary of the Aluthgama? (Alpitiya) Hospital, according to the available information, and police have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death.
Authorities are currently examining the details of the incident as part of their inquiry. No further information regarding possible reasons behind the death has been released.
