Canadian High Commissioner Isabelle Martin recently met former President Ranil Wickremesinghe in Colombo for an introductory meeting, during which they exchanged views on key developments and matters of mutual interest.
The courtesy call marked one of High Commissioner Martin’s engagements with senior political leaders following her appointment as Canada’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka in July 2025. During the meeting, Martin and Wickremesinghe discussed recent developments and shared perspectives on a range of issues.
Martin is a career diplomat who joined Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade in 1996. Over the course of nearly three decades, she has served in a number of diplomatic postings, including Cairo, Abu Dhabi, London and Canberra, where she was Political Program Manager and Deputy High Commissioner. She most recently served as Canada’s Ambassador to Qatar before assuming her current role in Sri Lanka.
Before her overseas assignments, Martin held several senior positions at Global Affairs Canada and the Privy Council Office, including serving as Director of Diplomatic Corps Services, Deputy Chief of Protocol and Special Adviser on National Security Issues.
Her meeting with Wickremesinghe reflects Canada’s continued diplomatic engagement with Sri Lanka and its efforts to maintain dialogue with key political leaders on issues of shared interest.
