Indian tycoon Gautam Adani, one of the world’s wealthiest individuals, has unveiled a bold plan to invest $10 billion in energy and infrastructure projects across the United States. The chairman of Adani Group, India’s second-largest conglomerate, announced that this investment will create up to 15,000 jobs in the country, marking a significant step in strengthening ties between the U.S. and India.

In a post on social media platform X, Adani congratulated U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on his election victory and emphasized the deepening partnership between the two nations. “The Adani Group is committed to leveraging its global expertise and investing $10 billion in U.S. energy security and resilient infrastructure projects,” Adani wrote, though he did not provide specific details about the projects or their timelines.

Adani Group, founded by Gautam Adani in the 1980s as a commodity trading business, has since expanded into numerous sectors, including renewable and conventional energy, ports and logistics, agribusiness, and defense. The conglomerate’s market capitalization exceeds $200 billion, making it one of India’s largest business entities. With a personal net worth of $86.8 billion, Adani ranks as the second-richest person in India and 18th globally, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index.

Adani’s announcement comes amid a push by U.S. industry groups to reassess environmental policies under the incoming Trump administration. On the eve of Adani’s statement, the American Petroleum Institute (API), the U.S. oil and gas lobby group, released a policy blueprint urging the new president to roll back several of President Joe Biden’s climate-related initiatives, which API claims have jeopardized energy security and jobs. Trump, during his election campaign, promised to undo Biden’s climate policies and ramp up U.S. oil and gas production.

Despite the political climate, Adani Group has been at the forefront of renewable energy development. The company operates over 11.2 gigawatts (GW) of wind, solar, and hybrid power projects globally and plans to expand its renewable energy portfolio to 50 GW by 2030. In addition, the group is exploring major international hydroelectric projects in countries such as Nepal, Bhutan, the Philippines, and Kenya.

This announcement also highlights a year of controversy for Adani Group. In January 2023, a report by the U.S.-based short-seller Hindenburg Research accused Adani of stock market manipulation, causing a sharp decline in the value of its listed companies. Further investigations by media outlets, including The Guardian and Financial Times, claimed that the Adani family had secretly bought back shares in its own companies using “hundreds of millions of dollars.” The Adani Group denied these allegations, describing them as part of a larger smear campaign by “Soros-funded interests.”

Despite these controversies, Adani’s aggressive investment strategy continues to drive the group’s global expansion, particularly in energy sectors that align with both traditional and green energy objectives. His latest commitment signals a strong ambition to influence the future of energy and infrastructure in the U.S., as the Adani Group looks to leverage its expertise and capital in the pursuit of long-term growth.
