The conflict between Israel and Iran has sharply intensified following a coordinated wave of Israeli and U.S. airstrikes on Iranian military, government, and infrastructure targets, marking one of the most direct confrontations between the longtime adversaries. Israeli officials said the operation, named “Lion’s Roar,” was a preemptive campaign planned for months to dismantle Iran’s missile and nuclear-related capabilities, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu framed the action as necessary to remove what he described as an existential threat and called on the Iranian population to oppose the ruling establishment.
Explosions were reported across several Iranian cities, including the capital Tehran, where smoke rose over central districts and key facilities linked to security and leadership structures were struck. Iranian authorities closed national airspace, restricted internet access, and activated emergency crisis-management systems as communications disruptions and reported cyberattacks affected media outlets and public services. Strikes were also reported in other areas, including the southern port city of Bushehr, raising concern about nearby strategic energy and nuclear infrastructure, though the extent of damage remains unclear.
The United States confirmed direct participation in the campaign, with President Donald Trump announcing the start of major combat operations under the Pentagon-designated name “Operation Epic Fury.” Washington said the objective was to eliminate missile threats and prevent Iran from developing long-range weapons, while acknowledging the risk of casualties as operations continue. Iranian officials condemned the strikes as violations of international law and warned of a decisive retaliation.
Iran soon launched waves of ballistic missiles and drones toward Israel, triggering nationwide sirens and forcing civilians into shelters as air-defense systems intercepted incoming attacks. The confrontation expanded regionally when air-raid sirens sounded in Bahrain, with reports of Iranian strikes targeting U.S. military installations and explosions observed in the capital Manama, prompting U.S. diplomatic missions to order personnel to shelter in place.
With aviation disrupted, military forces mobilized across multiple fronts, and threats exchanged by all sides, the situation has rapidly evolved into a volatile regional crisis. Analysts warn that continued retaliation or the involvement of allied armed groups could broaden the conflict beyond its current scope, raising fears of a prolonged and destabilizing confrontation across the Middle East.
