The latest tranche of documents from the U.S. Justice Department, released Friday under a congressional transparency law, casts fresh light on the relationship between Noam Chomsky, the world-renowned linguist, and Jeffrey Epstein, the financier and convicted sex offender whose social circle included some of the most influential figures of the last century. The emails and other communications, spanning years, show a familiarity that goes beyond casual acquaintance, revealing exchanges about vacations, financial disputes, and even public image advice in the wake of Epstein’s widely criticized legal plea.

Among the most striking disclosures is a February 2019 exchange in which Epstein claimed to have sought Chomsky’s advice on handling “the horrible way you are being treated in the press and public.” The advice, attributed to Chomsky in texts signed under his first name, suggested a strategy of non-engagement. “The best way to proceed is to ignore it,” the text read, noting what Chomsky described as “hysteria that has developed about abuse of women.” These communications occurred eleven years after Epstein’s 2008 guilty plea to soliciting an underage girl for prostitution and months before his reported suicide in federal custody awaiting sex-trafficking charges.

While none of the documents indicate Chomsky directly referenced Epstein’s private Caribbean island, notorious for sexual abuse, one email between the two men in 2016 shows Chomsky telling Epstein, “I’m really fantasizing about the Caribbean island.” The exchange followed a series of more mundane social arrangements, including invitations to New York gatherings and discussions of shared meals, which illustrate the personal closeness between the two. The records also show playful banter, such as Epstein comparing Chomsky and his wife Valeria to Pluto and its moon, and a risqué joke involving a Disney character.

The emails additionally detail Chomsky’s communications with prominent political figures. In 2017, he reached out to Steve Bannon, the former White House strategist under Donald Trump, requesting an introductory meeting and noting that Epstein had provided Bannon’s contact information. “Lots to talk about,” Chomsky wrote, signaling his interest in establishing connections beyond Epstein’s immediate circle. Bannon responded positively, underscoring the unusual reach of Chomsky’s personal network.

Financial interactions were also a recurrent theme in the correspondence. Chomsky sought Epstein’s input on disputes with his children from a previous marriage, including a complex matter over apartment payments. In one email, Epstein advised on whether a pointed email should be sent to a financial adviser regarding a $187,000 payment, responding, “NONSENSE,” in reaction to Chomsky’s draft. Valeria Chomsky even coordinated sending a $20,000 check through an Epstein associate to support “administering the Chomsky challenge in linguistics,” highlighting the degree to which their association extended into financial facilitation.

The communications also reveal the Chomskys receiving gifts connected to Epstein’s other social acquaintances. Former Epstein girlfriend Karyna Shuliak emailed a third party about sending Chomsky and his wife genetic testing kits, echoing a similar gift that Shuliak arranged for Woody Allen and Soon-Yi Previn. The references to Allen, who has faced long-standing sexual abuse allegations, reinforce the controversial nature of the broader network in which Chomsky participated.

Despite the intimacy and variety of exchanges, neither Chomsky nor Valeria Chomsky has publicly responded to inquiries about the emails, including questions about the authenticity of the 2019 advice attributed to the scholar. Earlier statements by Chomsky had emphasized primarily financial dealings with Epstein, but the documents underscore the social and personal dimensions of their connection, complicating the public narrative.

The release of these records comes amid heightened scrutiny of how federal authorities handled Epstein’s cases. In prior rulings, a judge found that prosecutors violated federal law by concealing Epstein’s plea agreement from dozens of underage victims. Epstein’s 2008 deal allowed him to serve only 13 months in a Florida jail despite overwhelming evidence of a vast international sex-trafficking operation. He was later charged again in 2019, though he died shortly thereafter, before the case could be fully adjudicated. Epstein’s associates, including Ghislaine Maxwell, later faced significant sentences for their roles in the network.

Interest in Epstein’s connections surged in recent years following political promises to release his client list, but no comprehensive public record has emerged. The congressional mandate that led to Friday’s disclosures represents a partial attempt at transparency, revealing the scope of Epstein’s interactions with high-profile figures like Chomsky. The documents shed light not only on social and financial linkages but also on the ethical and reputational questions surrounding relationships with known predators.

Noam Chomsky, now 97 and professor emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has spent decades shaping global discourse on language, politics, and human rights. He has been on unpaid medical leave from his position as a laureate linguistics professor at the University of Arizona since October 2023. While his intellectual contributions remain influential, the newly released emails may prompt renewed debate over the boundaries between personal association, public morality, and accountability, particularly when linked to figures involved in severe criminal activity.

The documents illustrate the complexity of Chomsky’s interactions with Epstein, intertwining mundane social rituals, financial advisory, political networking, and personal banter. As scrutiny continues, questions about how public figures navigate relationships with controversial associates and the ethical responsibility inherent in such connections are likely to dominate both academic and media discourse. In the intricate web of high-profile friendships, the latest disclosures remind the world that even intellectual giants are not insulated from the moral ambiguities of their social worlds.
