Elon Musk is reportedly considering merging three of his major companies — SpaceX, xAI, and Tesla — in a move that could reshape the future of space, electric vehicles, and artificial intelligence. While talks are in the early stages, sources cited by Bloomberg and Reuters suggest that at least one company could ultimately be folded into SpaceX.
Two scenarios are under discussion. One envisions a merger between SpaceX and Tesla, potentially linking the electric vehicle maker’s energy storage business with SpaceX’s space-based ambitions. Another option would combine SpaceX with xAI, the company that owns Musk’s social media platform X, ahead of a planned SpaceX initial public offering later this year. Such a combination would bring products including the Grok chatbot, the X platform, Starlink satellites, and SpaceX rockets under a single corporate structure.
Neither SpaceX nor xAI has publicly commented on the merger talks. However, recent filings in Nevada reveal the creation of two new corporate entities — K2 Merger Sub Inc. and K2 Merger Sub 2 LLC — suggesting that Musk is keeping his options open.
The potential mergers align with Musk’s broader strategy of consolidating resources and fostering collaboration across his companies. In 2025, SpaceX invested $2 billion in xAI, and Tesla followed suit earlier this month with a similar $2 billion investment. Last year, xAI acquired X in a deal valuing the AI company at $80 billion and the social media platform at $33 billion. SpaceX itself, founded in 2002, was valued at $800 billion in a secondary sale, making it the most valuable private company in the United States.
Experts note that combining SpaceX with xAI could enable innovative projects such as deploying data centers in orbit, an idea Musk has publicly advocated. A merger with Tesla could integrate the EV maker’s energy technologies with space-based infrastructure, creating synergies across Musk’s technological ecosystem.
Financial observers are watching closely, especially given reports that Musk aims to take SpaceX public in June, though past timelines for his ambitious projects have frequently shifted. Whatever path is chosen, the potential merger could mark one of the most significant consolidations in modern technology, bringing together space exploration, artificial intelligence, and electric mobility under a single vision.
