The European Union has announced a €545 million ($638 million) investment package aimed at expanding renewable energy projects across Africa, with a focus on electrification, modernized power grids, and affordable clean energy access.
According to a statement released Saturday by the European Commission, the initiative will direct €359.4 million toward developing a high-voltage power line in Côte d’Ivoire to strengthen regional energy distribution. Cameroon will receive €59.1 million to support rural electrification, while €45.5 million is earmarked to improve access to affordable renewable energy in Somalia.
The EU emphasized that despite Africa’s vast renewable energy potential, nearly 600 million people across the continent still lack electricity. Officials added that expanding green infrastructure could help create up to 38 million sustainable jobs by 2030.
The funding package is part of the EU’s broader commitment to supporting energy transitions in partner countries and accelerating global progress toward climate and development goals.
