The government of the Maldives has confirmed that the planned visit of its President to Sri Lanka — originally slated for November 7–9 — has been postponed, in light of the ongoing crisis triggered by Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka. According to Maldivian sources, the “biggest” visit has been deferred until conditions stabilise and a new date is agreed upon.
A senior Maldivian official commented: “Due to the current situation, our President’s visit was postponed. We are waiting for the new dates to be finalised before continuing with our plan.” The official added that, regardless of the delay, preparations remain underway for the visit once the situation allows.
In solidarity with its neighbour, the Maldives has already extended condolences and committed humanitarian assistance following the floods and landslides caused by Cyclone Ditwah — which left hundreds dead or missing and displaced thousands across Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankan officials have expressed gratitude to the Maldives for its prompt support amid the devastation. The postponement highlights the scale of the disaster’s impact on diplomatic schedules — though bilateral goodwill and cooperation appear unaffected.
