Foreign spies are infiltrating social media in unexpected ways, China’s Ministry of State Security has warned. In an alert posted Monday on its official WeChat account, the country’s primary intelligence agency outlined tactics used by agents to gather sensitive information and spread misinformation online.

The ministry revealed that foreign operatives often pose as ordinary users with interests in political, economic, military, or technological topics. By joining discussions under this guise, they attempt to extract classified or sensitive details while maintaining an appearance of casual curiosity.

It also warned that some agents deploy automated bots and hire “troll armies” to flood social media comment sections with false rumors. These actions are designed to undermine public confidence in government policies and distort historical narratives. Spies reportedly manipulate discussions further by introducing provocative topics and using fake accounts to polarize opinions.

Authorities have urged citizens to remain alert and to verify information before sharing it online. Suspicious activity can be reported via the 12339 hotline, the official website (www.12339.gov.cn), or local security offices. Citizens were also reminded of the importance of protecting classified information and countering espionage efforts in the digital realm.
