Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) has transformed from a controversial figure into a central player in international diplomacy, with his latest role as a broker in Ukraine-Russia peace talks underscoring his growing influence on the global stage.
As reported by The Times UK, MBS was once shunned by world leaders following the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, except for a few allies like former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, in recent years, he has repositioned himself as a mediator rather than an instigator, steering Saudi Arabia toward becoming a key geopolitical power.
Saudi Arabia has facilitated crucial prisoner exchanges between Russia and Ukraine and between the U.S. and Russia. Now, it is set to host a major diplomatic summit featuring Trump and Putin, an announcement that has further cemented the kingdom’s status as a neutral ground for global negotiations. Unlike the United Arab Emirates—another regional power close to both the U.S. and Russia—Saudi Arabia has also cultivated ties with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The Arab League summit in 2023, attended by both Zelensky and Russian representatives, signaled Saudi Arabia’s emergence as a diplomatic heavyweight. While some Western and Arab leaders were irked by Zelensky’s criticism of their lack of support for Ukraine, the summit reinforced Saudi Arabia’s growing role in global conflict resolution.
With billions in investments, diplomatic outreach, and strategic mediation efforts, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman appears determined to reshape Saudi Arabia’s image—not just as an economic powerhouse, but as a key arbiter in global affairs.
