Despite headlines touting Greenland as a frontier for rare minerals and strategic resources, experts warn that the realities of Arctic mining are far more brutal than often acknowledged. From extreme cold to logistical nightmares, extracting Greenland’s mineral wealth may be less lucrative than it appears.
Geological conditions present a major hurdle. The permafrost—frozen ground that can extend hundreds of meters deep—renders conventional drilling nearly impossible, while building stable foundations for mining equipment requires massive investments. On top of that, constant darkness during the long Arctic winter forces operations to run under floodlights, dramatically reducing efficiency and increasing the risk of accidents.
Extreme temperatures, ranging from -40°C to -50°C, create additional challenges. Metal equipment becomes brittle and prone to breaking, fuel and lubricants freeze, and the energy required merely to keep machinery and lighting operational drives operating costs sky-high. These conditions make mining in Greenland a logistical and engineering quagmire, rather than a straightforward path to profit.
Transporting materials adds another layer of complexity. Greenland lacks roads or rail infrastructure, meaning ore must be shipped by helicopter, light plane, or sea—often across hundreds of kilometers of treacherous terrain. Many fjords are only navigable for a few months each year, and a single storm can wipe out an entire season’s work. The Citronen Fjord zinc-lead project at 83°N illustrates the challenge: it sits 2,100 kilometers north of Nuuk and has only a three-month window to move a year’s worth of cargo. Delays or storms can jeopardize the project entirely.
Even potential climate benefits are misleading. Thawing permafrost is already damaging infrastructure, while extreme weather further inflates operational costs. Experts estimate that developing a mine from discovery to first ore could take 10 to 15 years, leaving investors exposed to volatile commodity prices and stranded assets.
These realities explain why Denmark and other stakeholders have been cautious in pushing Greenland’s mineral development. While political and strategic narratives highlight self-sufficiency and economic opportunity, the stark physics and economics of Arctic mining remain formidable barriers. In short, the much-hyped Arctic mineral bonanza may be far harder—and costlier—to realize than the headlines suggest.
