India has officially commissioned its second nuclear-powered submarine, Arighaat, into the Indian Navy, marking a significant enhancement of its naval capabilities. The commissioning ceremony took place on Thursday, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presiding over the event.
In his address, Singh highlighted the strategic importance of Arighaat, stating that the submarine will “strengthen India’s nuclear triad, enhance nuclear deterrence, help in establishing strategic balance and peace in the region, and play a decisive role in the security of the country.”
Arighaat, an Arihant-Class submarine, represents a major leap in technological advancements compared to its predecessor, Arihant. The Defence Ministry reported that the construction of Arighaat involved cutting-edge design and manufacturing technology, extensive research and development, and the use of advanced materials and engineering techniques.
The first submarine of the Arihant-Class was launched in 2016. According to the Defence Ministry, the new Arighaat incorporates significant technological upgrades, making it considerably more advanced.
This addition to India’s naval arsenal underscores the country’s commitment to bolstering its strategic capabilities and maintaining a credible nuclear deterrent.
