Iran’s recent membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is poised to significantly boost its political, trade, economic, and cultural ties, not only with its member states but also with countries like Kyrgyzstan. This milestone in Iran’s foreign policy is viewed as a major step forward in deepening bilateral relations with Kyrgyzstan and enhancing regional cooperation in multiple domains.

In an exclusive interview with Mehr News Agency, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kyrgyz Republic to Iran, Turdakun Sydykov, discussed the implications of Iran’s membership in the SCO and its broader impact on relations between Tehran and Bishkek. According to Ambassador Sydykov, the SCO membership will provide a platform for the expansion of cooperation in several crucial fields, including trade, economic growth, science, education, transportation, and communication.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations and Expanding Cooperation

Iran and Kyrgyzstan have enjoyed a cordial relationship since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1992, with both nations emphasizing mutual trust and respect in their interactions. While the two countries have made significant strides in political, economic, and cultural exchanges, Ambassador Sydykov highlighted that there remains untapped potential for further collaboration. He pointed to the recent meetings between the Kyrgyz Prime Minister and Iranian officials, which underscored both sides’ commitment to enhancing trade relations, especially in sectors such as agriculture, transit transport, and investment.

Notably, Kyrgyzstan has shown interest in utilizing Iran’s strategic seaports, offering a gateway for exports to Iran and further into international markets. The recent meetings within regional platforms such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and Eurasian Intergovernmental Council have paved the way for more frequent exchanges, focused on addressing issues such as trade barriers, customs cooperation, and logistics.

The SCO: A New Arena for Cooperation

Ambassador Sydykov stressed the importance of Iran’s membership in the SCO, which is the world’s largest regional organization, covering over 60% of the landmass of Eurasia and home to more than three billion people. With this membership, Iran gains a unique opportunity to engage in multilateral discussions on regional security, the fight against terrorism, and economic development. For Kyrgyzstan, the SCO serves as a platform to strengthen ties with Iran while ensuring that both countries benefit from enhanced regional cooperation, especially in areas such as trade, security, and cultural exchange.

One of the key developments facilitating stronger economic ties between Iran and Kyrgyzstan is the Free Trade Agreement between Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), signed in December 2023 with Kyrgyzstan’s active support. The agreement allows for duty-free trade between the two nations and simplifies the movement of goods, particularly agricultural and industrial products. This is expected to open up new avenues for Kyrgyz exporters to reach Iranian markets, while Iranian goods will also enjoy easier access to Kyrgyzstan and other EAEU member states.

Expanding Knowledge and Cultural Awareness

Despite the potential for deeper ties, Ambassador Sydykov acknowledged that there remains a gap in mutual knowledge between the peoples of Iran and Kyrgyzstan. Many Iranians are not familiar with Kyrgyzstan’s rich culture and history, and there is a common misconception about the country’s identity. Similarly, Kyrgyz citizens sometimes associate Iran with other countries in the Middle East. To address these challenges, the Kyrgyz Embassy in Tehran is actively working to promote cultural exchange through tourism and media, organizing events to raise awareness about Kyrgyzstan’s attractions, history, and heritage.

Plans for cultural initiatives include hosting Iranian delegations to Kyrgyzstan and bringing Kyrgyz artistic performances to Iran. This includes the recent participation of the Kyrgyz State Puppet Theater in Iran’s International Puppet Festival and the presentation of performances by the Kyrgyz State Youth Theater at the Fajr International Theater Festival. These cultural exchanges are seen as key to bridging the knowledge gap between the two nations and fostering a deeper understanding of each other’s traditions and values.

Media Cooperation: Key to Strengthening Bilateral Ties

The role of media cooperation in enhancing bilateral relations was also emphasized by Ambassador Sydykov. The Kyrgyz Embassy in Tehran has established strong working relations with several prominent Iranian media outlets, including Mehr News, Tehran Times, and Tasnim News, facilitating regular exchanges on political, economic, and cultural issues. The ambassador underscored the importance of media in fostering mutual understanding and enhancing the visibility of both countries in the eyes of their respective publics.

A Promising Future for Iran-Kyrgyzstan Relations

With Iran’s membership in the SCO and the ongoing economic integration of both countries within regional organizations like the EAEU, the stage is set for a more dynamic and multifaceted relationship between Iran and Kyrgyzstan. Both nations stand to gain from closer economic cooperation, deeper cultural ties, and a shared commitment to regional stability and security.

Ambassador Sydykov’s interview highlighted a promising future for Iran-Kyrgyzstan relations, with a clear emphasis on tapping into existing potential and building a more comprehensive partnership in the years to come. Through mutual respect, cultural exchange, and strong economic cooperation, the two nations are well-positioned to play a vital role in the evolving landscape of Eurasian and global relations.
