Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to meet Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa next week in Washington, D.C., a development sources describe as having a “very high possibility.” The meeting will take place during the ongoing 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, drawing international attention.
Ahmad al-Sharaa, who assumed Syria’s presidency after the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in late 2024, is a former jihadist leader turned interim president. His rise has focused on building a transitional government, stabilizing institutions, and re-establishing Syria’s presence in international diplomacy. Al-Sharaa’s attendance at the UN General Assembly is the first by a Syrian leader in nearly six decades, underlining his commitment to reintegrating Syria into global forums.
The talks with Netanyahu are expected to focus on regional security, de-escalation along the Israel-Syria border, and potential measures for limited cooperation. U.S. officials have played a key role in arranging the meeting, viewing it as a rare chance to reduce tensions between the two countries.
