More than five years after convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein was found dead in his New York jail cell, his younger brother Mark has emerged as one of the most vocal figures rejecting the official conclusion that the financier took his own life. According to reporting by Independent UK, the 71-year-old property developer has spent recent years insisting that Epstein was murdered to protect powerful interests, pushing claims that continue to resonate far beyond online conspiracy circles.
Jeffrey Epstein’s death in August 2019 was ruled a suicide, a finding later reinforced by a US Department of Justice report that said there was no credible evidence of foul play. Despite this, speculation has never faded, driven by Epstein’s wealth, his network of influential friends and the extraordinary failures at the Metropolitan Correctional Center where he was being held. Mark Epstein has repeatedly challenged the official narrative, giving interviews to major broadcasters and promising new evidence that he says will prove his brother was killed.
Speaking recently to US media, Mark Epstein claimed that forthcoming autopsy information would undermine the suicide ruling and accused authorities of a cover-up. He has framed the issue starkly, arguing that death in prison can only occur through natural causes, suicide or murder, and insisting his brother’s case falls into the third category. Independent UK notes that these assertions have brought a once-private figure into the public spotlight, subjecting his own life and finances to growing scrutiny.
Mark Epstein largely avoided public attention during his brother’s lifetime, and many people were unaware that Jeffrey even had a sibling. Since 2019, however, he has acknowledged receiving threats and being protected by armed guards for a period after his brother’s death. His personal wealth has also attracted curiosity. Though far less rich than Jeffrey, he has reportedly been semi-retired since his late thirties and has donated substantial sums to charity, prompting questions about how his finances intersected with his brother’s business empire.
Born in 1954 and nicknamed “Puggy,” Mark Epstein grew up in New York’s Sea Gate community and studied art before moving into property development. In the early 1990s he founded Ossa Properties, which at one point owned hundreds of apartments across New York City. Independent UK highlights that attention has focused on one building in particular, a block on East 66th Street where Jeffrey Epstein is believed to have rented multiple apartments. The address appeared in his infamous contact book, labelled as housing “models,” intensifying interest in how the property was used.
The building was reportedly purchased by Mark Epstein from Leslie Wexner, the former Victoria’s Secret chief executive who employed Jeffrey Epstein as a financial adviser for years. While Wexner has denied any knowledge of Epstein’s crimes and says he cut ties with him well before his arrest, the overlapping connections have continued to fuel suspicion. Mark Epstein has consistently denied any knowledge of his brother’s activities and says he did not monitor who used the apartments.
Mark Epstein has also made controversial claims about his brother’s relationship with Donald Trump, suggesting Jeffrey Epstein had damaging information about the former president. Trump has repeatedly denied close ties to Epstein and said he cut off contact years earlier, but Mark Epstein has disputed that timeline, claiming the two men remained in touch longer than publicly acknowledged. Independent UK reports that these statements have added a political dimension to an already incendiary case.
Central to Mark Epstein’s campaign is his belief that the official investigations failed to answer critical questions. Shortly after his brother’s death, he hired forensic pathologist Michael Baden, who argued that some injuries were more consistent with homicide than suicide. Subsequent official reviews acknowledged serious negligence and misconduct by prison staff, including broken cameras and missed checks, but stopped short of finding evidence of murder.
Those conclusions have done little to satisfy Mark Epstein, who has repeatedly called for a full investigation and even submitted a tip to the FBI asserting that his brother was killed to prevent him from naming names. Independent UK notes that he has portrayed Jeffrey as both distant and close at different times, describing years of limited contact while also offering to post bail for him shortly before his death.
The mystery surrounding Epstein’s estate has further deepened suspicion. Two days before his death, Jeffrey Epstein signed a new will placing his assets, estimated at more than $500 million, into a private trust, shielding the identities of beneficiaries. Mark Epstein has said he was not among them, but the timing of the document has raised persistent questions.
