Major Offshore Vietnam Discovery Could Be ASEAN’s Largest in 20 Years

Upgraded resource estimates at the offshore site raise expectations for one of Southeast Asia’s most significant energy finds in decades.

Offshore oil exploration: Murphy Oil’s recent discovery in Vietnamese waters could become ASEAN’s largest in two decades.

US-based energy company Murphy Oil has announced that recoverable resources at its offshore discovery in Vietnam are significantly larger than previously estimated, a development that could mark the biggest oil and gas find in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region in nearly two decades.

The company said updated assessments of the primary reservoir at the offshore site indicate substantially higher recoverable volumes than earlier projections, strengthening the commercial potential of the discovery. While Murphy Oil has not yet disclosed final reserve figures, the revised estimates suggest the project could rank among the most important upstream developments in Southeast Asia since the mid-2000s.

The discovery comes as Vietnam seeks to bolster domestic energy supply amid rising demand and declining output from mature fields. Offshore exploration has long been a cornerstone of the country’s energy strategy, but few recent finds have approached the scale now suggested by Murphy Oil’s latest data.

Industry analysts say a discovery of this magnitude could have far-reaching implications for regional energy security, investment flows, and Vietnam’s role as a hydrocarbons producer. A large-scale development would likely attract international partners, generate long-term revenue, and support the country’s transition strategy as it balances fossil fuel production with growing investment in renewable energy.

Murphy Oil has been steadily expanding its presence in Southeast Asia, focusing on offshore assets with long production lives. The company said further appraisal work and technical studies are ongoing to better define the size and commercial viability of the reservoir before final development decisions are made.

If confirmed at scale, the Vietnam discovery would stand out in a region where major new oil and gas finds have become increasingly rare, potentially reshaping ASEAN’s upstream sector and strengthening Vietnam’s position as a key energy hub in the years ahead.
