The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism of Sri Lanka, Vijitha Herath, MP, paid a courtesy call on President Dr Mohamed Muizzu today during the Maldivian President’s ongoing State Visit to Sri Lanka. The meeting underscored the continued importance both nations place on their longstanding diplomatic relationship and shared regional interests.
During the discussions, President Muizzu and Minister Herath reflected on the six decades of formal diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, which have been built on shared values, mutual respect, and enduring friendship between their peoples. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining close engagement and exploring new avenues of cooperation aimed at delivering mutual benefits to the two countries.
The talks also focused on strengthening collaboration in key development sectors. Particular emphasis was placed on expanding cooperation in environmental conservation, tourism, and trade, areas seen as vital to both economies and regional sustainability. The discussions highlighted a shared intention to deepen bilateral ties further in the coming years.
The President and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed are currently undertaking a State Visit to Sri Lanka at the invitation of Anura Kumara Disanayaka, President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, scheduled from 3 to 6 May 2026. The visit is expected to further reinforce diplomatic and economic partnerships between the two neighbouring nations.
