As Sri Lanka marks its 77th Independence Day, every citizen should be aware of the threats and risks facing the nation. As its highest priority, Sri Lanka must learn from its past and recent experiences to build a prosperous economy. A prerequisite for economic prosperity is understanding the international environment. With the global shift from unipolarity to multipolarity, Sri Lanka should recruit the best and brightest minds to navigate the emerging world order. To survive, sustain, prosper, and thrive during this challenging period, the country must develop and implement a multidirectional foreign policy and a robust national security strategy. National unity is national security!
To achieve economic prosperity, Sri Lanka must maintain social harmony and political stability. To preserve and advance its national interests, all leaders must recognise that most threats originate from overseas—separatism, religious extremism, narcotics, online scams, and other forms of serious and organised crime. An emerging challenge requiring immediate government attention is the need to establish legal and policy frameworks to deter and counter foreign interference, online falsehoods, and manipulations.
The conspiracy theories propagated by unscrupulous politicians for personal and political gain—particularly the claim that the Easter Sunday attack was staged by intelligence agencies—have lost momentum. Regardless of party affiliation, Sri Lanka’s Achilles’ heel remains its politicians. They need better education and training, particularly in English. Otherwise, they will be unable to access more than 1% of global literature. For example, many leaders could not read or comprehend the Easter Sunday investigation reports, particularly the one authored by Justice Imam, as it is available only in English.
The government must investigate and take firm action against those who fabricate and spread conspiracy theories that compromise national security. The false narratives promoted by religious and political leaders have disrupted the terrorist rehabilitation programme, leading to the spread of foreign exclusivist and extremist ideologies. Without further delay, the government must launch a far-reaching initiative to promote moderation, tolerance, and coexistence among all communities.
Within the political establishment—both government and opposition—there must be a strong norm and ethical stance against exploiting racial, religious, and other differences. Separatist and religious exclusivist elements remain active. National unity is national security, and it is achieved by building bridges of friendship across ethnic and religious divides. Regardless of personal or political differences, every citizen should be encouraged to contribute to social harmony, political stability, and economic prosperity.
Happy Independence Day, Sri Lanka!

I completely agree with the idea that national unity is essential for security. In these times, we must come together as a nation to face global challenges. Let’s support one another!
