Sri Lankan citizens can now apply for an electronic visa (e-Visa) to Israel through a new online system launched by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The initiative, which came into effect on 11 July 2025, allows eligible Sri Lankan and Indian passport holders residing in Sri Lanka or India to submit applications directly via the official e-Visa portal, without the need to physically visit an embassy or consulate.
This e-Visa system applies to the B2 visa category, which covers short-term visits for tourism, business, family visits, and limited-duration studies. The development represents a significant step in digitising visa services, easing administrative burdens, and improving access to travel documentation for citizens of both countries.
For Sri Lankan applicants, the processing of the e-Visas will be handled by the Israeli Embassy in New Delhi. While Sri Lanka does not have a dedicated Israeli diplomatic mission within its borders, the New Delhi embassy has long managed consular affairs for Sri Lankan nationals, and will now oversee the digital processing of all B2 visa applications submitted from Sri Lanka.
The application process is designed to be fully digital and user-friendly. Applicants must visit the official Israeli e-Visa website to access the application form. They are required to fill in the necessary personal and travel information, upload scanned copies of essential documents such as a valid passport, and pay the applicable visa fee through the secure payment system provided on the portal. Once submitted, the application is reviewed by consular staff, and if approved, the e-Visa will be issued electronically and emailed to the applicant.
This system marks a shift away from traditional paper-based visa processes, which often involved long waiting times and the inconvenience of physical appointments at visa centres. By enabling online applications, Israel aims to provide greater ease and efficiency for prospective visitors, and to encourage increased travel and exchange between Israel and South Asian nations.
The Israeli authorities have emphasised the importance of ensuring all information provided is accurate and supported by clear documentation to avoid processing delays. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also encourages applicants to apply well in advance of their intended travel date, particularly during peak travel seasons.
In addition to the new e-Visa scheme, Sri Lankan travellers are reminded that their own country also operates an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for foreign nationals entering Sri Lanka. Travellers planning journeys to or from Sri Lanka should ensure they understand the relevant visa or entry clearance requirements, depending on the purpose of their visit and the countries involved.
