Thai and Cambodian troops exchanged gunfire and grenades in a border area of northeastern Thailand on Saturday, marking the first military clash between the neighbors since a U.S.-brokered ceasefire was reached in August.
The Thai army reported that Cambodian soldiers opened fire in the Chong An Ma area of Ubon Ratchathani province, according to spokesperson Winthai Suvaree. The Suranaree Task Force has since been placed on high alert and instructed to respond “appropriately.” No injuries or fatalities were reported on the Thai side.
Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defense, however, accused Thai forces of initiating the clash, claiming that small arms and mortar rounds were fired at its An Seh military base. The ministry said the Cambodian armed forces are “carefully monitoring the situation” and remain ready to safeguard national sovereignty.
